Detail

Marianne Evans-Lombe creates drawings and performances called Body Drawings. In her performances, Marianne becomes her drawings, giving them the capacity to move in space and time. Light and shadows are essential elements in many of the original performances she has created. In addition to the four original Body Drawings, past performances include the outdoor Broadway Body Drawing and Glossary. Her current pieces tell stories that often go untold. Recognition questions cultural misconceptions about wearing the veil, Images (created with Linden Little) explores oppression and transcendence, and Origin of Painting tells the story of Dibutade, a Greek maiden, who in tracing a shadow created the first painting. Marianne currently performs in Colombia, South America. In September 2010, she performed Origin of Painting at Festival Ojo al Sancocho in Bogota. In September and October 2011, she performed I love Jose at Festival Ojo al Sancocho; and Origin of Painting at La Otra Historia in Medellin and Festival Bugarte in Buga. In September and October 2012, Marianne will perform Arbol ahorcado (The Hanged Tree) and Please Mind at various festivals in Colombia.

Marianne has a BFA and an MA in Visual Art from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. She has taught university classes in both art and women's studies and is the former Creative Director of the Little Room, a space for the arts in downtown Pittsburg.

In her current work, Marianne tells stories in the context of communities, creating performances grounded in the visual art practice of object-making. The communities involved participate in the development, creation and performance of the projects, blending two actions: the preservation of a cultural memory and a re-shaping of the story to reflect the communities perceptions and active participation. She has six works currently in progress: Beauty of Speed with Linden Little; Please Mind with Daniel Albertini; Worldwide Kumpania with Gabriel Suarez-Castro and Erin Sims; I love Jose; Arbol ahorcado and The Stones Cry.
